Bullet "THEY" ARE NOT "US"!

SLED is a computer that connects you to other computers. The information you can reach via SLED does not live on the SLED computer! Once you have used SLED to connect to another computer, SLED no longer controls the interaction nor is SLED responsible for the accuracy, currency, or acceptability of the information you find on that other computer. In addition you are limited to that system's commands and logic. We chose resources for SLED based on usefulness and easeReturn to Problems to watch out for of use but, unfortunately, these two criteria do not always coincide.

Bullet READ THE CONNECTION SCREEN

When you choose a menu item on SLED and hit <return>, if SLED makes a Telnet connection rather than a World Wide Web or Gopher connection, there will be an intermediate "connection screen". Read this screen. This is where we put any warnings, special keystrokes you need to know, exit instructions if they're not clear in the remote system, etc. You may want to print this screen or copy the information from it. If you're having problems making telnet connections using a graphReturn to Problems to watch out for ical browser, try our Help in Getting Telnet Sites from Netscape.

Bullet REMOTE SYSTEM NOT AVAILABLE

Occasionally, when you choose a SLED menu item, you will get a "cannot connect to host" message. Different systems will have different messages but their impact is the same: for whatever reason -- busy ports, system maintenance, change in policy on outside use -- that system is not accepting remote logons. Solution: try again later. If you have repeated problems with a particular site, please report it to the SLED team by using the <Comments> button at the oftop Return to Problems to watch out for h meacenu or by using "Write to SLED" under "About SLED" on the main menu or by calling in state at (800) 478-4667 or out of state at (907) 474-6564.

Bullet MENU ITEMS ON SLED NOT AVAILABLE

SLED is perpetually under construction. At any given time, we are working to make sure all the menu connections are active. If we know there is a problem with a particular site, weReturn to Problems to watch out for try to post a message explaining when that site will again be available.

Bullet HELP -- I'M STUCK IN @?!&!

Don't panic! Try these steps in order:

  • Try exit commands: quit, exit, bye, //exit, end, logout, or logoff.
  • Try typing the letter z. In some software, it acts as a "break" key.
  • Try hitting the <Control> key and the right bracket (]) simultaneously. When you get the telnet> prompt, type quit.
  • Try hitting the <Control> key and the c key simultaneously. <Control> c will often break you free although it may also pop you out of SLED.
  • When all else fails, hang up your modem and redial SLED. This is inelegant but it works.
  • If things are truly dire, turn off your computer then turn it back on and start again.

Return to Problems to watch out for Don't be embarrassed. It happens to all of us. It's not you -- it's the state of computing. It WILL get better!
