Alaska's population in 2009 was estimated at 698,473.  In 2000, the population per square mile was 1.1 persons (compared with 79.6 persons per square mile for the whole nation).   The land area of Alaska is 571,951.26 square miles.

7.6 percent of Alaska's population was over 65 years in 2009, while the national average was 12.9 percent of the population.

In 2009, 26.3 percent of the Alaska population were of school age (5-17 years). Nationwide, 24.3 percent were of school age.

Alaska's non-white population in 2009 was 29.7 percent of the total. American Indian and Alaska Natives composed 15.2 percent of the state's population in 2009.
