SLED Advisory Group Documentation
Automatic Additions to SLED
- Official City and Borough sites to Alaska Communities page
- Chamber of Commerce sites to Alaska Chambers of Commerce page
- Official Convention & Visitor's Bureau sites to the Community
Travel Guides & Convention and Visitor's Bureaus page. (If there
is no official government page for the community, add the C&VB or
Chamber of Commerce page to the AK Communities page as well.)
- Private Travel sites: If a community has no official C&VB site
but there is a good private site that covers the community, add that
to the Community Travel/C&VB page. If that community has no official
government page or Chamber of Commerce page, add the private travel
site to the Alaska Communities page as well as to the Community Travel/C&VB
page.
- University and College sites to Alaska Colleges and Universities
page
- Official Native Corporation sites to Alaska Business page
- Official Alaska Internet Provider sites to Alaska Business page
- Official Alaska Library Web pages and Alaska Library Associations
Web pages to List of Alaskan Library Web Pages
We are trying to keep community specific sites off of the Tourist Information
page as it was getting too cluttered and long. Those pages should go on
the ALASKA COMMUNITY TRAVEL GUIDES & VISITOR'S BUREAUS page instead
(see note above).

Collection Development Coordinator
Duties
The SLED Advisory Group will have a designated CD Coordinator
to guide the group through the process of evaluating and selecting sites
for SLED. The CD Coordinator position will rotate among the group members,
usually in 2-month stints. Individuals are encouraged to volunteer for
the responsibility.
- To receive proposed sites from members throughout the month. Often
the CD Coordinator sends a reminder to members via SLED-L.
- The CD coordinator shall review the weekly Friday Bulletins for web
sites that might be added to SLED, at his/her discretion.
- Send proposed site addresses, names and recommended SLED areas to
the staff in Fairbanks (Lisa Fjellheim) for placement on Re-SLED. This
is usually done about 7-10 days before the teleconference.
- The staff in Fairbanks will notify the CD Coordinator when proposed
sites have been placed on Re-SLED. The CD Coordinator will then alert
the Advisory Group members so that voting can begin.
- Before the teleconference, the CD Coordinator must print off any comments
made on Re-SLED and the vote tallies. This is usually done the morning
of the teleconference.
- During the teleconference, the CD Coordinator reads off the voting
results for each site and keeps the discussion on sites moving.
- Please keep the number of sites on ReSLED to 10 or less. If there
are more submitted, the Coordinator has the right to choose the 10 best
for ReSLED.
- The remaining sites can either be dropped or saved for the next month's
ReSLED.
Subject Area Guidelines
- Review existing links in your area.
The first thing to do is make sure the existing links in your subject
area are working. Go to your subject area at least once a month and
try them. Also check to see that the links take you where you really
want to go. Sometimes additional web pages are added between the home
page and good information. We want the SLED link to take people to the
most efficient starting page. Do check to see if the site creator can
be identified or if a link to the site's home page can be made from
the starting page you choose.
Occasionally, check the link to see that it is being updated regularly.
Stale pages with dysfunctional maintenance records may need to be
removed. Let our staff in Fairbanks know of any address problems.
(Lisa F. is the person to contact with such problems at: fxlmf@uaf.edu)
Recommend any "problem" pages to the CD Coordinator for
group review.
-
Find new resources in your subject area.
The second thing is to improve the subject area. As you review the
area you will become aware of its strengths and weaknesses. Through
web searching, informal discussions with friends or colleagues, professional
reading or events or personal research, you often find good sites
for SLED. Pass the sites directly on to the CD Coordinator to be reviewed
by the group. Pass sites that are not in your subject area directly
on to the subject selector in that area. Recommend at least one new
site in your subject area every three months. Whenever possible test
the recommended sites using Lynx or another text based browser before
submitting.
-
Review and vote on new sites.
The final thing is to review and vote on all new web pages collected
by the CD Coordinator. New sites will be listed on the "voting
form" web page. This is located at: http://sled.alaska.edu/resled.
Review and comment on content, ease of use, graphical and text access
and any other aspect that is important to a particular site. Try to
finish your voting a couple of days before the next meeting. At the
end of the review period, the CD Coordinator will tabulate votes and
present the vote totals and comments at the next meeting. If the vote
is close, the CD Coordinator or any member of the Advisory Group may
request that further review or discussion is needed. The CD Coordinator
will alert the staff in Fairbanks to add approved sites or to remove
unsatisfactory sites.
